www.thehudsonschool.org 5th - 12th grade In 1978, the state of New Jersey
directed its school districts to provide programs to better
accommodate their gifted and talented students. At the same time, a
group of educators and parents in Hoboken, concerned that their
children in Hudson County weren't being sufficiently challenged to
reach their full potential, initiated what they intended to be a
modest demonstration project to help the local school district
improve its curriculum.
Eighteen students and six teachers
started classes that fall, hoping to bring something useful back to
public education. But by the end of the school year, with all the
reports in, everyone arrived at the same conclusion - a community
had formed, around a passion for learning. Something special had
been created, and there was too much momentum not to carry on. And
so The Hudson School had begun.
The Hudson School is celebrating
its twenty-seventh anniversary, and we continue to exist for only
one reason - to celebrate our passion for teaching and
learning.
We offer small classes and
individual attention. The coursework is challenging and makes for a
thorough preparation for college and beyond. Our students, by and
large, come here because they feel it's "okay" to be serious about
their academic careers. We believe we have discovered what's right
in education.
Our fifty faculty members, many of
whom have advanced degrees, bring a wide range of diverse
experiences and perspectives to the school. As a group, they all
share one distinct quality-a profound commitment to teaching. They
see themselves not only as practicing experts in their fields, but
also as mentors-role models for students discovering themselves.
And so, at The Hudson School, you tend to feel a kind of
relationship between teacher and student-an old fashioned
affectionate human bond, if you will-that has become all too rare
in our modern lives.
Overall, The Hudson School is a
place where students find themselves among others who are excited
about learning and supportive of intellectual risk-taking, and who
value the importance of independent thinking, curiosity and
community service. Montclair Cooperative School 65 Chestnut St., Montclair, NJ 07042 973-783-4955, www.montclaircoop.org Nursery – 8th grade MCS is dedicated to educating children and adolescents for a life of self-direction and intellectual curiosity. The school’s approach to learning allows its students to excel academically and socially in a stimulating and challenging environment. MCS’s integrated curriculum draws music, art, dance, physical education, Spanish and computer skills into the study of core academic subjects. The language program balances a whole language approach to reading and writing with an emphasis on basic skills. The math curriculum lays a solid foundation of concepts ad skills, while providing a direct link to real-life applications. MCS’s inquiry-based science program encourages hands-on investigation, problem solving and field work as students delve into biology, physical science, astronomy, anthropology and archaeology. Affiliations with local museums, universities and local schools enriches the middle school experience for seventh and eighth grade students. Highly skilled and experienced teachers, assistants and parents (who have the option of helping in the classroom) form a partnership with the students that results in a greater sense of community, along with greater academic and social success. An extended day enrichment program is available before and after school. For information about open houses, admissions and financial aid, call (973) 783-4955. |
