Gordon School
45 Maxfield Avenue

East Providence, RI 02914

Gordon School is an elementary (Nursery - eighth grade) coed school in East Providence, Rhode Island committed to connecting children’s academic and social learning with the world beyond the classroom. We expect our youngest to explore what they wonder and require our students to apply their hands to what stirs in their minds. And that is why, in their last months on our campus, we have our eighth graders walk the Edmund Pettis Bridge in Selma, Alabama and design and implement a plan to effectuate change and empower others in the greater Providence community before they graduate.

In addition, Gordon has a long standing commitment to the LGBTQQI community, represented by:

  • Two social events per year specifically for LGBTQQI families
  • An annual admission reception for LGBTQQI families hosted by current LGBTQQI families
  • Recognition of the National Day of Silence in the Middle School, since 2006,
  • A Gender and Sexuality Alliance in Middle School, meeting weekly since fall 2015
  • Two faculty members who serve as liaisons to Gordon's LGBTQQI community
  • Representation by Middle School students at the annual Boston conference of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, since 2015.

The Wheeler School

Founded in 1889, The Wheeler School is an independent day school for girls and boys from Nursery through Grade Twelve in Providence, Rhode Island. Central to the School's philosophy is the assumption that all of us, students and teachers alike, can and should contribute to and draw from the extraordinary energy and vitality which is characteristic of this community. Most importantly, we believe that all those who participate in the Wheeler experience will recognize, celebrate and respect: Individuality, Commonality, Opportunity and Awareness.

We are proud of who we are, but an honest school admits that it isn’t for everyone. We are a vibrant, joyous place founded by an artist, with an academic program renowned for its creativity and innovation, but also for its rigor.  We are a place where three-year-olds and seniors share the same city block and high-five one another on their way across the courtyard. We are place that seeks to inspire and reward individual initiative with a flexible and student-centered program, and we are place where all kids, however they evolve and choose to define themselves, feel equally embraced by the culture.
