Product Description

In honor of May as National Foster Care month most of the families featured in this issue were built through foster care and adoption. Featured are two separate and remarkable stories of men who never planned on becoming parents, Terrence Calhoun of Washington DC and Tom Bauer of California. But life changed for them when Calhoun became a foster parent through Child and Family Service Agency and Bauer became a Court Appointed Special Advocate. Calhoun is now a single dad and Bauer is the coolest dad ever.

On our cover meet The New American Family. Brook and Brandi Beach of Kansas have titled their blog, Facebook page and forthcoming book The New American Family. The couple is fiercely protective of their four daughters and has a passion for helping other adoptive families.

Gay Parent Magazine (GPM) is partnering with RaiseAChild to feature their Let Love Define Family series (a series of stories featuring LGBTQ families that were built through foster care and adoption; RaiseAChild is the leader in the recruitment and support of LGBTQ and all prospective parents interested in building families through fostering and adopting). In this installment we feature 5-year old Andrew who was in foster care in California for 1,500 days before being adopted by Raquel and Crissel Guerra-Luna.

Another California couple, Pedro Virgen and Victor Pulido chose foster care and adoption to become parents. However, they never planned on becoming foster parents to a challenging teenager.

GPM will reach its milestone 20th anniversary issue at the end of 2018. To kick off our anniversary we're revisiting some of the families we've featured in our previous issues with a series of family update articles. Since we last wrote about them in 2015, the Galvez family of New York is now fostering a teen and adopted a little baby named Sylvia.

In addition to family stories, included in this issue is a list of LGBTQ friendly foster care and adoption agencies and organizations that can assist in building and nurturing your family.

Finally, included is a tribute to Kristi Parker. Parker was the owner and publisher of Liberty Press, a local LGBTQ magazine in Kansas. We reflect on her inspiration for Liberty Press, contributions to the LGBTQ community and her relationship with her son Jack.

Editorial contributors to this issue include Michael Coleman, Gary Hurtubise and Danielle Lescure for RaiseAChild’s Let Love Define Family series.
