Experience The IDEAL School of Manhattan

The IDEAL School of Manhattan is New York’s only K-12 independent inclusion school, where we celebrate the tremendous social, emotional, academic, and artistic growth of each of our students born in an inclusive, diverse, and nurturing educational community. Our name reflects our core values, IDEAL means Inclusion, Diversity, Excellence, Acceptance, Leadership.

On any given day at The IDEAL School of Manhattan, students may give a presentation on a civil rights leader, participate in a musical, enjoy Riverside Park, program a robot, or visit the Met. At IDEAL, we recognize that true learning is only possible when students feel accepted, empowered, and celebrated. The IDEAL Experience is built upon a rigorous academic program, based on the belief that students learn best when a high academic bar is set for them and skilled, knowledgeable educators scaffold their path to achievement. IDEAL’s inclusion mission calls us to educate students of all backgrounds and abilities together in the same classroom, with lessons differentiated to reach each individual learner at their level. We believe, and studies support, that inclusion education benefits all learners academically and fosters students’ kindness, self-assurance, and empathy. Our faculty is made up of dedicated teachers who know their students inside and outside of the classroom, assuring that our mission is carried out in both school and the community.

Through IDEAL’s robust arts curriculum, and arts and STEAM integrated throughout academic classes, students learn to take healthy risks as they explore multiple perspectives and strengthen their own thinking. The skills students acquire in the arts enhance their learning in all academic areas. The creative arts curriculum is interdisciplinary, culturally expansive, and introduces students to numerous media and techniques designed to enrich the artist’s problem-solving skills. Our performing arts programs allow students to develop a variety of theater and music skills from solo performance to ensemble and includes production work on the stage, in the studio, and with video. Partnerships with New York City outreach programs and cultural institutions extend classroom experiences. Arts classes in the Upper School (6-12) are mixed-grade, semester-long, and based on student interest. Arts offerings each semester are custom-tailored to suit the individual needs of students enrolled in each specific class.

Each year, IDEAL’s arts integration is put on display at two annual schoolwide events. The Science Expo is an opportunity for students to showcase concepts they have learned in science through interactive, hands-on exhibits. In the Middle and High School, students are guided to pursue individualized and interest-driven projects, many with real-world applications. Printed materials, websites, and social media campaigns accompany the work. The IDEAL creative arts coursework culminates in ArtBeat, IDEAL’s annual art show and performance. The Upper School’s winter theatrical production is a selection of one-act plays and the spring musical is put on at Symphony Space, where students learn how to work on and behind a professional stage.
