Explore UC Santa Cruz: A Progressive Gem on California’s Central Coast

The Campus

When visitors first see the University of California, Santa Cruz campus, they are awed by its natural beauty. High-rise buildings mingle with towering redwoods, and students walk along pathways with magnificent ocean views to get from class to class.

But inside that serene environment is a network of purposeful, innovative communities working together on important education and research. In fact, last year UC Santa Cruz was ranked third in the world for research impact by the British journal Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

What does this mean for your student? Perhaps they will be involved in some of our ground-breaking research projects, such as building the Internet of the future, exploring new techniques in agroecology and sustainable food systems, doing serious computer game design, or discovering ways in which bioelectronic and bioprotonic devices can help cure disease.

UC Santa Cruz offers exciting opportunities for study in our 67 undergraduate majors. Programs earning national attention recently include Film and Digital Media, undergraduate and graduate programs in Computer Game Design, and Linguistics. Students in the Jack Baskin School of Engineering benefit from our close relationship to nearby Silicon Valley, home to Google, Facebook, Apple, and other cutting-edge companies. High-tech professionals visit the campus and teach courses as visiting instructors, and many students work at summer internships in Silicon Valley. In fact, Business Insider Magazine recently ranked UC Santa Cruz among the “20 universities most likely to land you a job in Silicon Valley.” In 2016, LinkedIn showed that the top employers of Slug alumni in the San Francisco Bay Area were Google, Cisco, Genentech, Stanford University, and UC Berkeley.

At UC Santa Cruz, we recognize and support well-prepared students with exciting programs such as the 3+3 B.A./J.D. program, in which students can earn a bachelor’s degree and a law degree (from UC Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco) in six years instead of seven. We also offer three-year pathway degrees and the College Scholars Program, our honors program.

What Is a Banana Slug?

The UC Santa Cruz community has a history of priding ourselves on being different, which is how we became the Banana Slugs, one of the most well-known college mascots in the country. Banana Slugs are large slugs (usually bright yellow) that are often found in the woodsiest areas of our campus, but more than that, we chose our mascot to show our spirit: innovation, diversity, interdisciplinary thought, and an emphasis on community rather than competition. We strive to live by our Principles of Community, which are based on mutual respect and inclusion.

When your student graduates from UC Santa Cruz, they will be joining a network of over 100,000 proud Banana Slug alumni around the world. Past and present Slug alumni include:

• Emmy Award-winning director Cary Joji Fukunaga
• Civil rights leader Huey P. Newton
• Actresses Maya Rudolph and Camryn Manheim
• Astronaut Kathryn Sullivan, administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under President Obama
Susan Wojcicki, CEO of YouTube

The Residential Colleges: Living/Learning Communities

At the core of our progressive educational approach are our 10 residential colleges, which organize the campus into smaller living/learning communities where students feel a sense of community while living away from home. The colleges are organized around themes such as The Pursuit of Truth in the Company of Friends, or Science, Technology, and Society. Each college’s cocurricular activities and academic offerings reflect its theme, further enhancing the students’ sense of purpose.
